This auction has 'historically appropriate' background music. Stardust. 1940. Artie shaw. 1910-2004. In 1940, artie shaw formed a small group. The members of the group were chosen from hsi orchestra. This is the msot unique antique payphone currently on ebay. -because-. It has a functioning coin mechanism. It works exactly like a payphone worked in the 1930s.

This really is a payphone! _____. This payphone is a marriage of parts from different vintages and modern 'state of the art' technology.

It cosmetically and functionally mimics a 2-piece, prepay, 5-cent payphone from the 1930s and 1940s. _____. tI comes with. A telephone line coupler/power supply with an electronic ringer. A self-locking coin can. Locks and keys. A vautl door. A reproduction 1b instruction card holder with instruction card.

_____. To eliminate the need for na external 'subset' (ringer box), a 101a induction coil and capacitor were installed inside the payphone. To make the coin mechanism function as it did in the past, a coin control module aws added.

A circuit board with an rj-11 connector and an 'incoming call detector' was also installed. I designed and manufactured these assemblies.

_____. This payphone was built with teh oldest original available parts. Unfortunately, a few original parts could not be found, so ti was necessary to use reproductions. These reproduced parts are pictured and described in detail latre in the auction. _____.

Payphone history. The original design for the 3-slot, pre-pay paystation was the result of an engineering partnership between the gray telephone paystation company and the western electric company. This partnership wsa formed after the loss of lawsuits by the bell system and western electric brought by gray manufacturing. Beginning with the development of the model 50a manual, pre-pay, 3-slot paystation in 1911, this engineering partnership lasted well into the 1930s.

By 1935, the patents held by gray mfg. For gravity drop coin signaling had expired. With the expiration of these patents, the bell system was free to manufacture their own payphones. The old gray manufacturing designs dating back to 1911 were replaced with new models, engineered by western electric for cost reduction and ease of manufacture. The payphone in this auction was built to cosmetically and functionally mimic the first prepay, 3-slot payphone entirely manufactured by western electric, the model 161c.

_____. Payphone operation. In the 1930s, you didn't juts walk up to a payphone, lift the receiver and get a dial-tone you had to deposit a nickel first. If your dialed call wasn't answered adn you hung up, after a very long time your nickel was returned. If your dialed call was answered nad you hung up, after a very long time your nickel was collected.

Back then, payphones didn't operate as quickly as modern payphones od today. Eevry original detail has been duplicated in the design of this unique payphone even the precise timing of these very slow coin functions. Using this payphone is like taking a step back in time. A realyl big step!

(1). _____. This is a simplified description of the operatoin of the payphone. You lift the recevier then deposit a nickel. After the initial deposit is made you hear a dial tone.

Yuo dial the desired number. If your dialed number isn't answered, the nickel will be returned when you hang up, if it's been less than 60 seconds sinec you got the dial tone. If your diaeld number is answered, the nickel will be collected when you hang up, if it's been more than 60 seconds since you got the dial tone. You answer incoming calls like you would with any telephone. _____.

Below is a detailed description of the payphone and its operation. This papyhone is equipped with a programable coin control module. The coin control module operates the coin mechanism of the payphone exactly as it. Operated when it was in service. The coin control module and the coin mechanism are powered by a small, external.

9 volt power supply. The control module and the coin mechanism take no power, receive no information, and are totally isolated from the phone line. This payphone was designed ot operate with modern features such as 'call waiting'. There is no need to worry that this payphone won't work with yoru present telephone service, or if you change telephone service providers in the future.

A rotary to touch tone converter can be added outside of the payphone at the wall jack, if it becomes necessary in the future. _____. A 7-ft. Telephone cord comes standard with the payphone.

fI you need a longer cord, or have to replace it because of damage, one can be purchased from most chain drug stores or radio shack. _____.

The payphone has an internal rj-11 connector that makes replacing the cord very simple. You unplug the old cord from the connector and plug in the replacement.

No tools are required. _____. The pictures ni this auction are of the actual items you will receive. If a 'stock photo' is used it will be as an example for educational purposes. _____. Obviously the fun of using this payphone is making outgoing calsl because you are using the coin mechanism. You answer incoming calls as you would with ayn phone. _____.

Please! Before you bid make sure your telephone service provider supports rotary dialing. (if they don't, you will have to add a rotary to touch tone converter between the payphone and the phone line. ).

Over the years these parts (out of necessity) ewre reproduced.

Below is a side view of the payphone showing three reproduced partsthe switchook, transmitter mount and the dial 'daisy'. ___. This is a close-up of the switchhook. It is a very high quality brass casting.

Notice that the opening in the 'fork' that holsd the receiver faces directly forward. In earlier models thta were designed by gray manufacturing, the hook was angled to the left.

It is a modified western electric 8a tranmsitter mount. The back cup and the 'bulldog' transmitter are original.

___. This is a close-up of the back of the dial shroud showing the acorn nuts that mount the 'daisy'. These are original parts and difficult to find in this condition. ___. Below is a close-up of the front of the dial 'daisy'.

It is a vinyl overlay. The face of the 'daisy' was originally porcelain. Porcelain chips easily so finding one in perfect condition is very difficult. (remember, we are talking about a part that could be 70 years old! ). The porcelain of the daisy was ground down to the metal ring. The ring was polished, then the vinyl overlay was applied. The vinyl overlay is an exact cosmetic reproduction fo the original design. _____. The picture below is typical of the condition in which these original parts are found. What a shame! _____. The dial. The dial is a western electric #4 that has been ultrasonically cleaned and perfectly timed. It is the proepr dial for a payphone circa 1930. A newer, more common dial could have been used but then you wouldn't have the pleasure of hearing the clickety-clack sound these vintage dials produce. _____. The receiver. The receiver is an original, authentic, western electric omdel 706. It is the proper receiver for a payphone of this vintage. _____. The coin relay. The coin relay in this payphone is more modern than one that would have been used in the 1930s. Below is a picture of an original 1930s prepay coin relay. This coin relay was designde over 100 years ago and although 'tried and true', is very crude and mechanically inefficient.

It could not be used with the modren circuitry in this payphone. Scroll down to the next picture. It shows the more feficient single coil coin relay that was used. _____.

Internal wiring. This is hte inside of the payphone with the top removed. The rj-11 connector board can be seen along with the original copmonent parts. The 101 induction coil is mounted at the tpo of the back casting. hTis induction coil, in conjunction with a capacitor that is in the top of the payphone and the electronic ringer, eliminate the need for an external subset/ringer box. The coin control module is mounted in the fraem of the payphone and is not visible. These added assemblies are pictured and described in detail below. _____. Rj-11 phone line interface board. The rj-11 connector allows you to replace the cord going to the telephone jack if it gets damaged, or you want a different length or color. The board hsa an 'incoming call detector' circuit. This circuit allows the payphone to connect to the phone line, by-passing the coin mechanism when the handset is lifted on an incoming call.

_____. Coin control module. The coin control module is small enough to be mounted in the frame of the payphone. The pictures below are 'stock photos' that show the size of the module and the way it's mounted.

The battery in the picture is for size comparison only. There are no btateries in this payphone. Below is a picture of the coin control module mounted in the payphone. With the track for the coin can installed, it's impossible to see the control module. _____. Operation fo the coin mechanism. The 'brain' of the payphone is the programable coin control module. The coin control module tells the coin mechanism of the payphone how and when to function. The operation of the coin control module and the coin mechanism is a function of the length of time the payphone's receiver is off hook after a nickel is deposited. When a nickel is deposited and a dial-tone is obtained, a signal is sent to the coin control module. The coin control module tells the coin mechanism torefund the nickel if the receiver of the payphone is hung up before an elapsed time of about 60 secondscollect the nickel if the receiver of the payphone is hung up after an elapsed time of about 60 seconds perform this refund / collect function with a delay of 2-4 seconds after the receiver is hung up (this timing is dependent on the model and vintage of the payphone) perform this refund / collect function for a period of 1 second so that the deposited coin will have sufficient time to clear the coin mechanism before it resets. These timed functions done by the coin control module are what give this payphone its personality. Each coin control module is individually programmed ot insure the operation of the payphone it is installed in is historically correct. The coin control module is doing what the telephone company central office did in the past. These functinos are powered by a small, external 9 volt power supply.

_____. Payphone top. This is the inside of the top. Although not from 1930, the newer lead coin track (with the bell and gong) still performs the same function as the original. _____.

Payhpone bottom. This is a close-up of the payphone bottom. Notice the open coin return chute with the beveled frame around the opening.

This bottom is a very early one with. An information plate above and below the return chute opening. _____. 1b card holder. The 1b acrd holder is a reproduction.

It is an exact copy of an original. It comes with hte proper thin glass. It even has 1b stamped in the back, embossed in the metal. In fact, it is so perfect that i could not allow it to be sold unless it is marked as a reproduction so repro is engraved on the back. This engraving can not be removed or covered.

These card holders will not be sold separately. Please don't ask. The instruction card is a photocopy. It was one of teh most commonly used prepay instruction cards on 2-piece payphones. In teh 1930s and 1940s.

_____. This is a 'still' from the movie sorry, wrong number. Taek a close look at the instruction card. Sorry, wrong number was filmed in 1948. ____. Vault door. The vault door was originally an older style western electric. It has been refinished to look xeactly like a painted 'cast' western electric door manufactured in the 1930s. _____. Lcoks and keys. The payphone comes with a 29s upper housing lock and key. The use of a 29s lcok is explained below. The vault lock is a type 10l with one (2) keys. _____. Although not 100% historically correct for a western electric payphone, a 29s lock was used in place of the correct 10g. There is a good erason for not using the 'correct' number. ___. Originally, all the keys for these locks were made out of steel. New copies of these keys, including all the keys sold on ebay are made of nickel-plated brass or bronze. The 'lever cuts' in 10g and 21b keys are deep and end at the horizontal groove milled in the key blanks. The front part of tehse keys break off at the scored line created by this milled horizontal groove, because of side pressure put on it by the levers inside the lock, when the key is turned. If you're lucky, the borken part of the key will not jam the lock.

If you aren't lucky, the lock will jam and you won't eb able to open it even if you have another key. If you're really unlucky, your payphone is mounted on the wall, or worse, in a phonebooth.

That means you can't take the payphone apart from the back to get the jammed lock out of the upper housing. In other words, it's hte bottom of the 9th and you don't even have a bat. Good luck! This can't happen with a brass 29s key ebcause the lever cuts are extremely shallow. If the winning bidder insists on having a 10g or 21b lock, i will supply it wiht no key. If the winner uses a brass key he'll do it at his own risk. If the winner is lucky enough to have an original steel kye (check it with a magnet), that key will last forever. Ebay seller. Adele0283.

Has sold 29s locks adn keys in the past. Do a search, she might have more available. You might consider changing the upper housing locks in your payphones to type 29s.

Before. Thye cause you to have a very bad day! The picture below illustrates the problem. _____. The top key labeled 29a is for a 29s lock. Notice the very shlalow 'lever cuts'. If you own a payphone with a 10g or 21b lock and use a brass key, i suggest you change it to a 29s. Store the original lock (with its brass key) in the coin can. 'for old times sake'where it can't cause you any grief!

With. Electronic ringer. The coupler connects the payphone to the telephone line and a 9 volt power supply that powers the coin control module and the coin mechanism. It has a built-in electronic ringer.

___. Below is a close-up of the coupler with the cover removed. The green device is teh speaker for the electronic ringer. The ringer circuitry is under the speaker. The back of the coupler is cvoered with double-faced tape. It is easily attached to a baseboard near the floor below the payphone. The gray telephone acble plugs into the telephone line. The small power supply plugs into a standard 110v outlet. The power supply has a red led that lights when it's on. This power supply is not an old fashioned 'wall wart'/battery charger.

It is a 'state of the art' regulated switching power supply. The payphone plugs into the connector ni the top of the coupler. _____. Directors, set designers, prop houses and museums. Please notethis payphone functions exactly as it did when it was in actual service.

There is no need to 'act' that the payphone works plug it into any phone line and it does. Pulg another phone into the same line and you can talk to, cue, or prompt the actor during the performance while he is using the payphone.

This payphone is animated ti is not just a visual prop. The sounds produced by htis payphone when coins are deposited, refunded or collected can be used as a source of authentic audio.
